The Goddess Zaouli Returns

The Goddess, Zaouli Returns

Afriky Lolo’s sixth annual dance performance, Zaouli, is a traditional West
African dance of celebration and welcoming.

“Zaouli” tells the ancient, traditional folk tale of a lion and his daughter
waiting to be married and the snake, bird and eagle who pursue her. The story
is told through different dances, drum rhythms and styles that include traditional
dances from Mali, Guinea and Ivory Coast.

Experience the power and joy of authentic West African dance as dancers
and drummers take you through a journey of traditional African dances, symbols,
languages, rhythms and songs. This year’s celebration features 75 West African
dancers from Afriky Lolo’s four dance companies with dancers ranging from
ages 6 to over 60: Afriky Lolo (African Star), the primary adult performance
company; Tassman (Fire), the teenage company; Yele (sunshine), the children’s
company; and the Founders, for those over 50.

Directed and choreographed by Diadie Bathily, Zaouli also includes live
drumming by eight African drummers and original costuming brought from Africa
by Mr. Bathily.
