Now in its 35th year, Dance Africa is a multi-day celebration of the culture of African and its Diaspora. The event has been performed in cities including New York, Chicago, and Dallas, and has featured dance companies from across the nation.

Dance Africa 2012 will showcase performances by host Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Ensemble and other local performers, as well as by special guest companies Afriky Lolo, Giwayen Mata and Capoeira Luanda from Bahia Brazil.

Afriky Lolo will be performing The goddess Zaouli, (2009) a traditional West African folktale adapted for the stage by Diadié Bathily, the company’s founder.  This African fable, set to original and traditional African music and brought to life through dance and drumming, tells the story of the Goddess Zaouli, her father Lion, her two suitors Snake and Bird, and her two friends, one of whom betrays her out of jealousy and leaves her to die after her suitors prove unworthy to marry her.  The tale’s conclusion – wherein Zaouli’s revenging spirit, (intent on tormenting her betrayer) is calmed by her father’s love and forgiveness – captures the timeless themes of Compassion, Redemption, and the Power of Love.
